Questions before your first skate
Gear, levels, routes, lessons and Skater Migration.
Your first skate
How much does it cost to skate with you?
Nothing. Our weekly skates are free and run by volunteers. The only paid event is Skater Migration, once a year.
Which skate should I try first?
With us, First Friday is the easiest start: 10 to 12 miles from SoundScape Park at about 10 mph. Still learning to stop and turn? Begin with a Saturday lesson at Tropical Park. Tuesday night in Miami Beach is faster and more advanced — try it once you're comfortable on city streets.
Do I have to sign up?
The weekly skates are free and open — just be at the meeting point on time with your helmet. Join our Telegram group to see the confirmed route and any last-minute changes.
What if I'm slower than the group?
Pick the skate that matches your level: First Friday keeps an easy pace of about 10 mph, Tuesday is more advanced. If you're still learning to stop and turn, start with our Saturday lessons at Tropical Park.
Where do I find this week's route?
In our Telegram group. The Tuesday route is confirmed there every week before we roll.
Gear & safety
Bring this
- Helmet · required on every skate
- Wrist guards · required at Skater Migration
- Blinky light · required on night skates
- Water · always
Is a helmet required to skate?
Yes. Helmets are mandatory on every skate — we care about your safety.
Should I bring night lights?
Yes. Blinking lights are required on night skates. Bright or reflective clothing is recommended and headlamps are a good idea. Flashing wheels, a fluoro vest or a sequined jumpsuit are optional — the helmet is not.
Do I need insurance for skating?
Everyone signs a waiver accepting the risks of skating. Check whether your health insurance covers accidents away from home — and if you're visiting from abroad, make sure your medical coverage applies in the US.
Are bikers welcome?
Yes! Cyclists are welcome as long as they give skaters plenty of room — ride behind, ahead or beside the group, because skaters kick out to the side.
Weekly skates
When and where is the Tuesday night skate?
Every Tuesday at 7:30 PM from 2201 Collins Ave, Miami Beach. Urban streets, 10 to 18 miles, more advanced.
What is the First Friday skate?
On the first Friday of every month, rain or shine, we meet at SoundScape Park (500 17th St, Miami Beach) for 10 to 12 miles at about 10 mph. The route changes every month. Park at the 17th Street Garage ($2/hr), wear a helmet and protective gear, and bring water.
Do skates happen if it rains?
First Friday is rain or shine. For any other skate, check the Telegram group before you head out.
Skater Migration
Can I participate if I'm not an experienced skater?
Skater Migration is built for experienced skaters who are comfortable on streets with traffic and can cover at least 15 miles, including bridges, signals and rough pavement. Beginners shouldn't skate it — but you're welcome to ride along on a bike.
Where do the skates start?
On the boardwalk behind the host hotel, at 63rd Street and Collins Avenue.
Where can I park?
On 72nd Street, at $1.25 per hour. From there, head south on the boardwalk to the host hotel.
What will be raffled?
Our sponsors donate shirts, wheels, gear and skates. Raffle tickets are $5 each or 5 for $20.
How do I register?
Registration is on RaceResult. Pass prices go up each month — the current price is on our Skater Migration page.
